An automotive copper lock nut is used in conjunction with an exhaust stud, a lock nut is just like a standard nut, but the lock nut has the added function of locking itself to the stud thread. According to the international standard DIN14440/DIN14441,  the locking mechanism for this type of nut is based on the slit at the collar. The slit is collapsed before tightening onto the screw or bolt. As the nut is tightened onto the fastener, the slit expands, pinching the threads of the screw or bolt and locking the nut in place.
